The Illinois Trial Lawyers Association has installed John D. Cooney as its new president for 2014-2015. Cooney succeeds Kevin Conway, who held the position from 2004-2005. The organization, founded in 1952, represents over 2,000 trial lawyers who are committed to promoting justice and protecting constitutional rights. Tim Tomasik

Mr. Tomasik has extensive experience in handling high-profile and complex cases. He was lead counsel for the Plaintiffs’ Executive Committee of the World Trade Center litigation, which alleged security breaches that led to the 9/11 hijackings and air crashes. Under his guidance, the case was settled for $1.2 billion. In addition to his legal experience, Mr. Tomasik has also written several legal articles.

In addition to the prestigious awards, Tim was named a fellow of the International Society of Barristers, an honor society of exceptional trial attorneys. He currently serves on the Board of Governors of this organization. Other honors Tim has received include being named a Top 40 Under 40 by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company of Chicago in 2000 and a Leading Lawyer in 2008. He also served as the General Chair of the Chicago Bar Association’s Judicial Evaluation Committee for 15 years and was awarded the William J. White Award of Excellence for his work in 2009.

Todd A. Smith

Attorney Todd A. Smith, a founding partner of Smith LaCien LLP, is a member of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association. He has a strong background in civil litigation and has represented plaintiffs in numerous aviation accidents. His expertise in these types of cases includes commercial and general aviation, as well as small craft accidents. Most notably, he represented the families of passengers killed on Ethiopian Airlines Flight 191, which crashed shortly after takeoff in Chicago. The crash resulted in the grounding of Boeing 737 Max planes worldwide.

Mr. Smith has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including being named Lawyer of the Year by Chicago Lawyer Magazine and the President of the Illinois State Bar Association. In addition to his honorable achievements, he has also been named a “Best Lawyer” by The Best Lawyers in America and has been featured in many national publications. He has also been named a Parliamentarian of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

John D. Cooney

As a founding member of the Mass Torts Litigation Committee of the American Bar Association, Mr. Cooney has extensive litigation experience. He has tried several cases to verdict and has also served as a state prosecutor. He has been elected to the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association’s Board of Managers. In addition, Cooney is an elected manager of the American Association for Justice. His legal achievements include numerous awards, including the President’s Award for Distinguished Achievement in Litigation.

Gregory L. Shevlin

Shevlin is no stranger to the trial court. After a year spent at the state’s attorney’s office, he decided to join a law firm that specializes in personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death, and workers’ compensation cases. Shevlin cites his love of the courtroom and the people who represent their clients as the main reasons he became a lawyer.

Shevlin is an active member of numerous professional organizations. As a member of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association (ITLA), he served on the organization’s Executive Committee and Board of Managers. He also served as president of the East St. Louis Bar Association and St. Clair County Bar Association. Currently, Shevlin is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the American Association for Justice, the Missouri Trial Lawyers Association, and the St. Clair County Bar Association.

Antonio M. Romanucci

Mr. Romanucci earned his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Wisconsin in 1982, and his law degree from the John Marshall Law School in 1985. He is licensed to practice law in Illinois and before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He has also been a frequent contributor to the Associated Press and the Washington Post. In addition to serving as an attorney and speaker, Mr. Romanucci is also a member of several professional organizations.

Mr. Romanucci’s vast experience in personal injury litigation has earned him recognition as one of the top trial attorneys in Illinois. He has been named the State’s Top Attorney since 2004, is a member of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), the world’s largest trial bar, and has earned the trust of peers in the legal profession. He is also a member of the Chicago-based firm Romanucci & Blandin, LLC. His practice focuses on catastrophic personal injury, workplace accidents, and wrongful death, and is also actively involved in civil rights cases.
